The beach

Croyde

Croyde sits on the North Devon run. Swell, wind and tide for this beach and the neighbours, so you can pick a peak before you leave the car park. Today is cloud, 16°, 2kt NNE.

Devon’s most famous peak. Fast, hollow beach break that needs the right tide and gets busy the moment it is on.

Downend on the north side is the more serious wave. Low to mid is the window. High is often a shorebreak.

Parking

North Devon Council’s Croyde car park is the coastal short-stay tariff: in summer £1.60 an hour up to £16 all day; in winter £0.90 an hour or £3.50 all day. Down End is the Braunton-side entrance; the Ruda end is the village/holiday-park access. Beachside Holiday Park notes the Ruda-end parks fill fast in summer.

Hire & lessons

Surf South West is on Croyde Burrows Car Park, Moor Lane, original school, hire and adaptive centre. Surfing Croyde Bay is at Baggy Lodge, Moor Lane, with lessons, hire and showers. Croyde Surf Hire (the pink shop in the village since 1987) sizes boards and suits for Croyde and Saunton.

Vibe

The RNLI calls Croyde a premium surf beach with powerful waves, prominent rip currents and heavy sandbars, and still popular with families on the sand. The peak is competitive when it is on; the schools run beginner groups in the flagged water. This is not the longboard cruisers’ beach.

Access & hazards

RNLI: powerful waves, prominent rips and heavy sandbars. Patrols 10am–6pm on the published seasonal dates; no flags means no lifeguards. The Met Office rates Croyde a high risk of rips. Headlands at both ends are rocky. High tide is often a shorebreak, the working window is the drop.
