The beach
Putsborough
Putsborough sits on the North Devon run. Swell, wind and tide for this beach and the neighbours, so you can pick a peak before you leave the car park. Today is cloud, 16°, 3kt ENE.
The quieter, usually cleaner corner of Woolacombe Bay. A favourite when the rest of the coast is messy.
Worth the extra walk or the small car park fee. Banks hold shape later into the tide than Croyde.
Faces W. Best swell WSW–NW. Level: all. Crowd: quiet.

Before you paddle out at Putsborough
Parking
Day parking is the Putsborough Sands Caravan Park car park overlooking the sands. High-season daily rate is £15 (weekly £70). Out of season the gatehouse posts a lower rate; winter tickets are sold through the beach office.
Hire & lessons
Nick Thorn Surf Coaching is the hire and school based on Putsborough. Barefoot Surf School also runs lessons on this end of the bay.
Vibe
Barefoot calls Putsborough quieter and more spacious than Croyde or Woolacombe, and the learner beach of North Devon. Nick Thorn coaches beginners through to progressive surfers and notes more shelter when a south-west wind is up.
Access & hazards
There is no RNLI patrol at this end of Woolacombe Bay, cover is at Woolacombe and Croyde. Barefoot still rates it the safest learner beach locally, but you are on unguarded water. Rocks sit under Baggy Point at the south; give the headland a wide berth in swell.
