The beach
Freshwater West
Freshwater West sits on the Pembrokeshire run. Swell, wind and tide for this beach and the neighbours, so you can pick a peak before you leave the car park. Today is cloud, 16°, 2kt NE.
Exposed, powerful Pembrokeshire beach. One of Wales’ best waves when a clean west swell meets an easterly.
Rips are serious. If it is big, treat it like an open-ocean beach, not a holiday bay.
Faces WSW. Best swell SSW–W. Level: intermediate. Crowd: quiet.

Parking
Free National Trust car park at the beach, dawn–dusk. No overnight parking or camping. Not suitable for coaches. Toilets at the beach park. Gupton Farm parking is for staying guests only.
Hire & lessons
Outer Reef Surf School operates from the main beach car park and Gupton Farm, lessons and surfboard hire at Freshwater West.
Vibe
Outer Reef: host of the Welsh National Surfing Championships since the 1960s, a competitive beach, plus beginner, family, improver and advanced coaching when conditions allow. National Trust: wild beach, popular with experienced surfers.
Access & hazards
Outer Reef: strong rip currents; for the more experienced surfer and swimmer unless with a local provider; beginners only in suitable conditions. National Trust quotes RNLI Lead Lifeguard Supervisor Chris Rigby: large breaking waves, rip currents, submerged rocks and sandbanks. Met Office: high risk of rips. Lifeguards in the summer holiday window only (Outer Reef: early June–September).
